About theOpenHandbook
A free, independently researched guide to Pune — written by someone who lives here, knows the bus routes, has climbed the 103 steps to Parvati and eaten the pitla bhakri at Sinhagad Fort’s summit.
What theOpenHandbook Is
theOpenHandbook is a free city guide to Pune — Maharashtra’s second-largest city, one of India’s fastest-growing metros, and a place that most travel websites describe with the same three bullet points (Shaniwar Wada, Osho Ashram, IT hub) without ever going deeper.
This site goes deeper. The guides here cover why the Delhi Darwaza at Shaniwar Wada faces north (it was a political statement by Bajirao I about his ambitions toward Delhi), what ukdiche modak actually is and how to identify a fresh batch from a stale one, and exactly which platform at Swargate bus stand the Nashik Shivneri departs from. The kind of detail that is genuinely useful — and that most travel content does not bother to find out.
Every article on theOpenHandbook is written from primary research. Timings are verified from official sources. Fares are checked against current MSRTC schedules. Historical claims are sourced from documented records. When something changes — a new metro station opens, a bus route is revised, an entry fee goes up — the articles are updated.
What This Site Is Not
Our editorial commitments
- 🚫No sponsored content. No restaurant, tour operator, hotel or attraction has paid to be featured on this site. Every recommendation is editorially independent.
- 🚫No affiliate-driven rankings. When we say Joshi Wadewale is the best vada pav in Pune, it is because of the quality of the dry garlic chutney — not because of a commission.
- 🚫No content farms. Every article is written by a person who has been to the places described, checked the facts, and made deliberate choices about what to include and what to leave out.
- 🚫No outdated information without notice. Articles carry their last-verified date. When key information changes (timings, fares, entry fees), we update the article and note the revision.
- ✅Free, always. Every article on this site is free to read with no login, no paywall, no newsletter gate. Good information about Pune should be accessible to everyone.
Who Writes This
theOpenHandbook is written and maintained by Mohit, a digital marketing and SEO professional based in Pune with over 15 years of experience across website development, content strategy, Google Ads, and search engine optimisation.
Pune is home. The heritage sites in this guide are not places Mohit visited once for research — they are places he has walked through dozens of times, watched change over years, and spent time understanding in a way that a weekend visitor cannot. The Parvati Hill sunrise guide was written after many 6 AM climbs. The Swargate bus guide was written after many buses caught and a few missed. The misal pav opinions are deeply personal.
The digital marketing content on this site comes from the same place — 15 years of running Google Ads campaigns for Indian businesses, watching what the data actually shows about CPC costs by industry and city tier, and being consistently frustrated by the gap between generic how-to content and the real numbers that businesses need to make decisions.

Why Pune
Pune is one of the most historically significant cities in India — the administrative capital of the Maratha Empire at its greatest extent, the city where Lokmanya Tilak built the modern Indian independence movement, a place where a 1730 fort and a 2024 metro station coexist within three kilometres of each other. It is also one of India’s most consistently underrepresented cities in English-language travel and heritage content.
Most guides to Pune cover the same surface. theOpenHandbook is an attempt to go a level deeper — to write about Shaniwar Wada the way it deserves to be written about, to explain why Tanaji Malusare’s sacrifice at Sinhagad matters and not just that it happened, to give the pitla bhakri at the summit the paragraph it has earned.
Pune deserves better coverage. This site is a contribution toward that.
