The Open Handbook is committed to transparency in how its content is produced. This policy explains how and when we use artificial intelligence tools in our publishing workflow, and what that means for readers.
1. Our Position on AI in Publishing
Artificial intelligence tools have become a genuine part of modern publishing, research, and editorial work. We use them. We believe in being open about that — because readers deserve to know how the content they are reading was made.
At the same time, we hold AI-assisted content to exactly the same editorial standards as fully human-written content. AI assistance is a tool, not a substitute for editorial judgement, accuracy, or accountability.
2. How We Use AI Tools
AI tools are used in the following ways on The Open Handbook:
Research assistance:
We may use AI tools to assist with background research, topic scoping, and identifying relevant sources. All claims made in published articles are independently verified.
Drafting and writing assistance:
Some articles are drafted in full or in part with the assistance of AI language models. All AI-drafted content is reviewed, edited, and — where necessary — substantially rewritten by a human editor before publication.
Translation:
Our non-English content (currently German) may be initially translated using AI translation tools, followed by human review and editing.
Summaries and structural assistance:
AI may assist in producing initial outlines, summaries, or structural frameworks for articles, which are then developed and edited by human writers.
3. What AI Does Not Do on This Site
AI does not:
- Publish content without human review and approval
- Make editorial decisions about what to cover or how to frame stories
- Replace fact-checking or source verification
- Write content that is published without any human involvement
4. Labelling
Where AI assistance has been a material part of an article’s production, we aim to note this at the bottom of the article. The precise disclosure will reflect the degree of AI involvement.
We are committed to reviewing and strengthening our labelling practices as industry standards evolve.
5. Our Responsibility
Regardless of how content is produced, The Open Handbook is fully responsible for what is published on this site. If you identify an error — in AI-assisted content or otherwise — please report it and we will correct it promptly.
