Editorial Policy

Last Updated: June 23, 2026

The Open Handbook is committed to publishing content that is accurate, fair, transparent, and genuinely useful to readers. This Editorial Policy sets out the standards that govern how we produce, review, update, and correct content.

1. Our Editorial Mission

We exist to make practical knowledge accessible. Our editorial mission is to produce content that a reader can actually use — to make better decisions, understand complex topics more clearly, and navigate the challenges of money, business, health, careers, and everyday life with more confidence.

We do not publish content simply to rank on search engines. Rankings are a means to reach readers, not the end goal. Content that ranks but does not genuinely help is not content we want to publish.

2. Standards for Accuracy

Before publication, every article on The Open Handbook is expected to meet the following standards:

  • Claims are supported by credible sources, including government publications, peer-reviewed research, established news organisations, or authoritative industry bodies
  • Statistics and data points are cited with their source
  • Where expert opinion is referenced, the expertise of the source is relevant to the topic
  • Opinion is clearly distinguished from fact

We do not publish rumour, speculation, or unverified claims as fact.

3. Corrections Policy

We get things wrong sometimes. When we do, we correct them promptly and transparently.

If a factual error is identified after publication, we will:

  • Correct the error as quickly as possible
  • Add a correction notice at the top or bottom of the article noting what was changed and when
  • For significant errors, publish a separate correction notice where appropriate

To report an error, please email: corrections@theopenhandbook.com with the subject CORRECTION – [Article Title].

4. Article Updates

The world changes, and our content should reflect that. We review and update articles when:

  • Laws, regulations, or official guidance in the topic area have changed
  • Statistics, prices, or other time-sensitive data have changed materially
  • New authoritative information has emerged that affects the accuracy of the original article

Updated articles show a “Last Updated” date in addition to the original publication date.

5. Conflicts of Interest

The Open Handbook participates in affiliate programmes and may accept sponsored content. These commercial relationships are always disclosed to readers. They do not influence our editorial judgements, topic selection, or conclusions.

No advertiser, affiliate partner, or sponsor has the right to review, approve, or influence editorial content before publication.

6. Sourcing and Attribution

We attribute all sources clearly. When we draw on data, statistics, or quoted text from external sources, we cite the source. We do not reproduce copyrighted material without permission. We do not publish content that plagiarises another publication’s work.

7. Comment Moderation

Where comment sections are enabled, comments are moderated. We will remove comments that are abusive, defamatory, irrelevant, spam, or that contain misinformation. We do not remove comments merely because they criticise our content or opinions.
