How the Group Stage Works – FIFA World Cup 2026 Format Explained

This is the first FIFA World Cup to feature 48 teams. The format divides all 48 nations into 12 groups of four teams each. Every team plays three matches — one against each of the other teams in their group. Points are awarded as follows: 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, 0 points for a loss.

The tiebreakers, used when teams are level on points, are applied in this order:

  • Goal difference (goals scored minus goals conceded)
  • Total goals scored
  • Head-to-head result (if only two teams are tied)
  • Head-to-head goal difference
  • Head-to-head goals scored
  • Fair play record (yellow and red card points)
  • FIFA World Ranking

The eight best third-place teams are ranked across all 12 groups and the best eight advance. This creates significant drama in every group right until the final matchday, as teams battle for points to maximise their chances of being among the best third-placed sides.

Group H Standings – Spain, Cabo Verde, Saudi Arabia, Uruguay

Spain, the world’s second-ranked team and reigning European champions, are in Group H. Their La Roja machine — technical, patient, relentless — faces Cabo Verde, Saudi Arabia (the team that famously beat Argentina in 2022), and Uruguay. Spain should advance comfortably, but this is a group with more danger than the rankings suggest.
